Morgan Adams' father's dying gifts to her are his pirate ship and a one-third part of a map of a treasure island - unusually inscribed on his scalp. Thinking herself in need of a Latin scholar to unravel the map, she buys learned slave William Shaw and sets off in search of the rest of the map. However, it is Shaw, obviously with plans of his own, who gets the second part. He's somewhat easier to deal with, though, than the holder of the last part - Morgan's less-than-loving piratical uncle Dawg.

If Burt Lancaster's 'The Crimson Pirate'(1950) is quite probably the most entertaining pirate movie ever made - the 'serious' Erroll Flynn's movies apart - this 'Cutthroat Island' scratches, although a little bit lighter, the same level. Wonderful action and locations, vigorous, splendid soundtrack, fair acting (Geena and Langella at their best), what else do we need? It's a pity that, as we've heard, it lost money. It really deserved a better destiny, once it's so rare a pirate movie nowadays. Maybe it's a movie yet to be discovered, by future generations. Once and a while I use to play it in video, just for the kicks. I keep watching it as a delightful piece of filmaking. Chests, full action, daredevil stunts, jolly rogers, adventure, islands, deep blue sea, smell of powder. I loved it.
Despite its massive box office loss, this is actually quite a fun little film. Sure, it could possibly be lambasted for being a vanity project from its director (after all, he did let his then wife of the time take the leading role and let the film go massively over-budget) but the action sequences are exciting and plentiful, the sword fights are well-directed and choreographed and the whole cast seems to be having a whale of a time and it has to be said their enthusiasm is catchy. Unfortunately nowadays, kids these days don't seem to have the patience for a good old-fashioned swashbuckler which is a real shame, because in my estimation Cutthroat Island has over 10 times as many fights that are at least 100 times more exciting than anything you'll find in mainstream sci-fi pap like "The Phantom Menace." Besides, what looks better, blasting someone in the stomach to end their life immediately or clashing swords with your opponent, elegantly hacking them up a piece at a time with a touch of class? I know which one I'd take anytime. Anyway, Cutthroat Island is a throwback to the glory days of Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and as a both an adventure and pirate movie, it largely succeeds. Go see it now though, because I have the feeling its the last in its genre we'll see for a while…
It's a swashbuckling extravaganza, but Davis is not convincing. And before anyone objects, it's not because she's a woman. Get out already! This is the '90s, and women can do anything. But they can't escape from a lousy movie any better than a man can.
In order to get the PG rating for the theatrical release, more than a minute had to be removed, four more seconds got lost on the VHS release. Something that is also very interesting about the British VHS are the many instances of audio censorships. Punches, kicks and other fight audio effects were partially removed or just turned down in volume. This usually does not even catch the viewer&#39;s ear, however, all in all a certain censoring method can be made out. Interestingly enough, not a single one of these changes were applied to the British DVD version.<br/><br/>When the DVD was released in 2003, it would have been possible to release it uncut with the BBFC 15 rating, but the producers decided against it. The version that was given to the BBFC was already censored. Some of the previously cut scenes were put back into the movie, but others were removed instead. Still, one more scene (a headbutt) had to be removed in order to have the censoring agency let the film pass through without complaints.
